Roatan, Honduras

I was looking through old pictures this morning as I slowly sipped on my Northern Lite Caramel Latte and I came across our honeymoon album.  I am not sure how a couple of kids decided on Honduras for their honeymoon but it was a beautiful trip and a perfect setting to kick off a life together.  It's amazing what photos can do to your memory. As I slowly looked through our album, the moments, sounds, smells, and images all came back to me. I found myself alone at my desk, laughing aloud as I remember moments I thought completely passed. But what I learned this morning is that moments never fully pass -and there are some moments that are worth reliving.

We went to a resort on the island of Roatan, which is an island off the mainland of Honduras. It was very secluded. You had to take a quick ferry from Roatan just to get to our resort.  And because August/September bring the highest temperatures of the year in Honduras, we basically had the resort to ourselves. It was called Barefoot Cay and it's owned by an adorable American couple - John & Melisse.  They picked us up from the airport and live on the island in their own bungalow. It's a wonderful place run by wonderful people. *Sadly, we found out yesterday after talking to Mel at Barefoot Cay that John passed away a couple of weeks ago after battling cancer for 5 months. We are so saddened to hear that. They will be in our prayers.

Our view from our kitchen.

We wandered around the main island of Roatan a couple afternoons to explore the area and decided to be a bit adventurous. We went through a ropes course, went horseback riding through the mountains and along the beach, got an arial view of the island on a seaplane and took an afternoon sailing.  It was many of these adventures that make me laugh still to this day.

The Roatan Airport on the right...it's a bit scarier to see it from this angle!! :)

Our horseback riding adventure is one that I will never forget. We were told that we could not leave Honduras before we experienced horseback riding on the beach. Sounds romantic, eh? It was MISERABLE. I was bucked off my horse and thought I was going to be trampled, too. The first two pictures here were taken before we got on them. Gosh we look so happy. Too bad we decided to jump on an animal for a ride. Humans. Yoi.

We played a lot of Scrabble - sitting by the pool, sipping on Orange Fanta. Mike won. A lot.

It was exactly what we wanted. I think we saw more animals than we did people the entire time we were on our secluded island - a perfect environment for a bride who'd rather go to the dentist than be surrounded by tons of people in public. :) We highly recommend Barefoot Cay to anyone but especially those who love scuba diving. Roatan has one of the best coral reefs in the world and most of the people visiting come to explore the underwater world. Because scuba diving is one of my worst fears, we did not meet any underwater creatures. Check out their website:  http://www.barefootcay.com/

And take a look through an old photo album sometime - you'll be amazed what it can do for you. :)
