49 candles, 3 graduations and more!

Amidst all of the stress and negativity of finals week here at St. Olaf, I wanted to share some of the fantastic celebrations that have occurred lately. We have had a lot to celebrate!  Milestones and important moments, relationships - both lifelong and new, pages turned and chapters completed, victories - both minor and seemingly triumphant, and memories - both ones just created and others lifelong.

Adam turned 21 last week! Part of me cannot believe he is old enough to do anything (short of renting a vehicle, of course) but the other part of me celebrates what an awesome young man he has become. We couldn't miss out on his celebration so we all met in St. Peter and had a lovely evening at Gustavus. At one point or another, all five of us have lived in Complex (Adam's dorm) so it was somewhat surreal to be back - with a baby - celebrating our baby brother's 21st.

I am always swarmed with memories driving up the hill and making the trek up the Complex stairs...it even smells the same. By the end of the night, we were all reminded  how meaningful our experiences at Gustavus were - and the great thing is, we have the constant reminder of each other as our Gustie family continues to expand.

Adam, we are so proud of all you've done to get where you are today. You are such a handsome young man. We are excited to see where you take yourself...

This spring also marks the end of my first year working at St. Olaf. It has become clear to me lately how much I've gained from this year - in particular, the relationships I've made with my students. They have been a great group to supervise. I look forward to the opportunity to shift into friends as this year comes to an end. We've done a lot of celebrating over the last couple of weeks. We had the all-staff Residence Life banquet last week, followed by separate staff outings to honor the commitments they've made to making this year special for each other and their residents.

My Ytterboe staff went to Culver's to get ice cream to get some relief from the HOT evening we had. They are a great group of people - most of whom will be graduating this week. Congratulations you guys. I know you all have so much life and success ahead of you!
My Hill Kitt staff dressed up for our all-staff banquet. Both my staffs were obviously the best dressed on campus that night. :)

We decided with all the stress and craziness that finals and closing brings, we wanted to get off campus for awhile.  I couldn't think of a better place to retreat than my home in Medina so we loaded the vans and headed up to the cities for the day! We ate brunch together, played games, pet dogs, chased cats, laughed a lot, went to Coldstone and headed back to campus. It was a wonderful way to celebrate a fantastic year.
We played basketball in the drizzling rain, which made for a very slippery, awesome time! They are all winners, even Ellie (the dog). :)

This week also brought Jeffrey's birthday! Sadly, Adam & I weren't able to celebrate with them but we were there in spirit. The cousin party went on without us and they had a wonderful time! Cousin Sheila just returned from her freshmen year at Lawrence in NY and cousin Max just returned from being abroad. I can't wait to see both of you to hear how everything was! :)

This week also marked Tricia's graduation from St. Scholastica in Duluth where she was studying Exercise Physiology. We weren't able to make it to the ceremony but we were honored to celebrate with everyone on Monday night for dinner! I gave my mother-in-law my word that I wouldn't post the family picture of them I took (even though it's a great picture) so just imagine 5 really good looking Wobschalls here. :) Congrats Trish.
I took this picture on our way home from Waseca after Tricia's graduation dinner. This is my favorite tree and it reminds me that we are either really close to home or leaving after an awesome time.

It has been a wonderful year at St. Olaf. Thank you to both of my staffs of RAs and JCs. You guys are SO great and I am honored that you've shared your lives with me this year.  I wish you all a very happy summer and to my seniors, a joyous graduation celebration! Good luck with all that lies ahead for all of you.

I will always think of St. Olaf now when I see windmills. It is a symbol of campus and it makes for a beautiful view from our living room window. :)

I'd also like to congratulate my grad-school friends, Kerin & Carla, who will be graduating this weekend from St. Thomas! I am so sad I won't be able to be there but I will be thinking of you both. God truly blessed me with your friendship and I know you will continue to help and change lives through counseling. And I KNOW how much work we put into that Master's program, congratulations. You guys rock.

Oh, and by the way - my 3-on-3 co-ed intramural basketball team went undefeated to win the title. It was my first intramural experience and I survived without breaking or tearing anything - a triumph in my book. :) Plus, we got a sweet t-shirt out of the deal.

Life is sweet. When you find yourself surrounded by negative people or energy, try to remind yourself that there are plenty of things we can be celebrating. We are alive - cheers to that.

Happy Mother's Day

Mom,

You inspire us. Teach us. Love us. Defend us. Remind us. Encourage us. Show us. Enhance us. Believe in us. Challenge us. Support us. Give us. Humor us. Tolerate us. Understand us. Complete us. And most of all, mean the world to us.  Thank you for being an example we all seek to follow. Someday, if I am half the mother you are, I will be content and my children will be lucky. Love you.

My heart is full and it is a heavy full.  But it is not a sad heavy.  It is an overflowing full - steadily pulsating with admiration, appreciation, wonder, and thankfulness.  It has been a weekend of celebration and when we celebrate, I reflect. And when I reflect, I feel.  It is in these moments that I often become overwhelmed and heavy. This weekend we have celebrated new life, new roles, enriched relationships, memories, sacrifice and faith. We celebrate the joy that Haddie has brought our family.  We celebrate Ty in her new journey of motherhood. We acknowledge the continuous ways our mothers and grandmothers enrich our lives each day. We remember our mothers and grandmothers whom we've lost and the grieving mothers who have lost. We honor the sacrifice Jesus made in the excitement of our goddaughter's first communion. We celebrate family life.

There are many reasons to celebrate and we relished in all of them.

Haddie bear and I took a break from all the excitement.

And then it was on to Stephie's first communion...

Of course a Rohde family gathering would not be complete without a few games. Since it was Stephanie's day, she got to decide all of the dance-off match-ups.

---

As the sun sets, the day comes to a close but the celebration continues.  With each new dawn, I continue to relish in thankfulness for the amazing mothers I have in my life - my mother, sister, mother-in-law, grandmothers, aunts, friends - I continue to learn from the examples you live and I appreciate and honor your journey each and every day.

undesignated deer crossing

You will not believe what I am about to tell you...
I think they may need to invest in a few of these for next year...

Today was the Minnetonka 1/2 Marathon and despite the wicked wind and bitter temperature, we rocked it! That may be hard to believe as well, but the crazier thing was what happened around mile 3.  We were just making our right-hand turn onto Orono Orchard Rd. from highway 15 and all of a sudden a guy was tackled to the ground, a runner screamed, and spectators along the turn jumped in various directions.  Three deer ran across our path and completely took down a male runner! A fricken deer tackled a runner! The poor guy (the runner that is) completely taken back, slowly rose to his feet and looked around puzzled, wondering what just happened! I guarantee when he went to bed last night, he did not dream of being sniped by a deer before he got to mile 4. Sadly, he was unable to finish the race. The deer, too, rose to its feet and ran off. 1 point deer, 0 points runner. I hope the poor guy gets a refund... oh, and the story doesn't end there!  As I was running alongside the lake in between miles 9 and 10, I heard a bunch of hustling in the grassy area that separated the lake from the road and all of a sudden from behind the tall wooden fence, three more deer jumped over and cut right in front of me!! My strong disliking for deer only deepened after the second encounter. Fricken deer.

I averaged 8:38 miles and finished in 1:53:00.  Apparently, March weather on a May day and wild deer out for blood combine for great motivation to race to the finish line as fast as you can.  I highly suggest it to any deer lover out there but I will say, I am going to stick to urban races from here on out. :) It was really fun running around my hometown - it has been a long time since I've been in that area of town and I was flooded with memories as each mile passed - my grandparents' house, the park where we took prom pictures, old friends' homes, even friends and teammates from high school who were also running.  It made for an interesting day of reflection.

After the race, my dad and I had a great lunch at Jake's. We ate and then I headed home to spend some quality time with Mikey after a long weekend of the NFL draft. He spent more than 50 hours working this weekend so it was great to be home together! He did a wonderful job covering the draft and had a great time hanging out with their first round draft pick, Christian Ponder. We had our 3-on-3 intramural basketball games tonight and I am happy to report our team remains undefeated! Woop, woop! I am done moving for the day - it's time to watch our movie. Thanks for a wonderful weekend.

A special thank you to my wonderful friends Kerin & Denny for coming to watch today. I appreciate your support and LOVED seeing you both! :)

ps. no passing out today - I felt great :)
